The Landesarchiv Berlin hold the written records of the historical city administrations, Senate departments, local district administrations, courts, and public institutions of the state of Berlin. We are both a city and state archive. At the same time, we function as a parliamentary archive.
Berlin’s eventful history is reflected in State and municipal holdings, reaching nearly 50 kilometres of archival material, These holdings are supplemented by personal papers, documents of the parties and mass organisations of the GDR, and various collections with charters, maps and plans, posters, million of photographs, and reels of film.
Since 2011 the films of the Landesarchiv Berlin on the construction and fall of the Berlin Wall are part of the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme.
Our library comprises 148.000 media units on Berlin’s political, legal, economic, social, and cultural development.
